ETF inflows accelerated this week as fresh record highs in the U.S. stock market stoked investors’ animal spirits. A cool $9.8 billion flowed into U.S.-listed ETFs during the week ending Thursday, Aug. 30, pushing year-to-date inflows up to $172.9 billion.

The latest data, which comes from FactSet, showed the bulk of the weekly inflows going to U.S. equity ETFs—$8.3 billion. The S&P 500 leapt above 2,900 for the first time ever this week, peaking as high as 2,917 after the U.S. and Mexico secured a bilateral trade agreement.

ETFs like the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY), the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI), the iShares PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) and the SPDR S&P BIOTECH ETF (XBI) were among the biggest flows winners this week.

EM Attracts Inflows Despite Woes

Other categories also saw inflows, though on a smaller scale. International equity ETFs took in $930 million, even as debt and currency woes continued to plague emerging markets. Argentina’s central bank hiked interest rate to 60% this week in an attempt to staunch the bleeding in its currency.

The iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (IEMG) pulled in $410 million during the week.

Meanwhile, U.S. fixed-income ETFs had net inflows of just over $1 billion, including inflows of $319 million for the iShares iBoxx $ USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG).

The U.S. 10-year Treasury bond yield was little changed week-over-week, last trading around 2.84%.
