Bargains and safety were the two themes investors embraced this week as volatility continued to slam markets. All told, investors added $6.6 billion to U.S.-listed ETFs during the week ending Thursday, Nov. 1, pushing year-to-date inflows up to $214 billion.

The S&P 500 briefly fell to a six-month low on Monday before rebounding on the back of bargain buying. Funds like the iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF (IWD), the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) and the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) were favored by investors looking for low-cost exposure to U.S. stocks.

At the same time, investors rushed into short-term fixed-income ETFs, taking advantage of the safety and solid yields they provide, with minimal interest rate risk. The SPDR Bloomberg Barclays 1-3 Month T-Bill ETF (BIL) and the iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF (SHY) had inflows of $957 million and $839 million, respectively, during the week.

On the flip side, bond funds with more interest rate risk, such as the iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) and the iShares TIPS Bond ETF (TIP), were shunned as the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield eclipsed 3.2%, close to recent highs (bond yields and prices move inversely).
