August continues to be a strong month for ETF inflows. In the past week, investors added $9.1 billion into U.S.-listed ETFs, bringing total assets under management to $2.42 trillion, according to FactSet data.

U.S. equity ETFs led the way in the week ending Thursday, Aug. 18, garnering $4.5 billion worth of inflows. That was followed by international equity ETFs with $2.7 billion, U.S. fixed-income ETFs with $2.1 billion, and international fixed-income ETFs with $550 million.

In contrast, commodity ETFs had outflows of $570 million, and leveraged ETFs had outflows of $420 million.

Emerging Markets Popular

Once again, emerging market ETFs saw big interest from investors. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) was the fund with the largest inflows of the week, at $1.3 billion. Its cheaper sister fund, the iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (IEMG), had $520 million worth of inflows of its own, while its rival fund, the Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF (VWO), had nearly $500 million worth of inflows.

A few fixed-income ETFs also saw notable creations this week, including the iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD), with inflows of just under $500 million. The broader iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) had creations of $350 million.

GLD Tops Outflows List

On the other end of the spectrum, the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) topped all ETFs when it came to outflows. The inflows leader on a year-to-date basis fell out of favor this week, with redemptions totaling $710 million.

Another commodity-themed prodct to see selling was the VelocityShares 3x Long Crude Oil ETN (UWTI), with outflows of nearly $250 million. A sharp rally in crude oil prices may have compelled UWTI traders to take profits.

Meanwhile, the WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity Fund (DXJ), which has often found itself on the outflows list this year, continued to bleed assets this week. DXJ's outflows totaled $228 million.
