ETFs Notch Muted Gains as Markets Seesaw

Exchange traded funds pared losses from earlier in the month as investors bought U.S. and international equity funds.

ETFs brought in $2 billion in the week ending Feb. 17, a departure from the $5.3 billion in outflows the week prior. Most of the funds went to U.S. and international equity ETFs, which collectively pulled $4.5 billion, compared to the $2.3 billion which exited last week, according to ETF.com data.

The investments came despite losses across U.S. equity markets during the week. The S&P 500 dipped 0.3% for the week, while the Nasdaq dropped 0.6%.

Among the best performing ETFs were the JPMorgan BetaBuilders Europe ETF (BBEU), the JPMorgan BetaBuilders Europe ETF (VOO) and the JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) which saw a total $2.6 billion flock to the funds last week.

On the other side of the ledger, fixed income funds shed $2.1 billion, compared to the $3.3 billion which exited in the week ending Feb. 10.

Funds which saw the lost losses included the iShares iBoxx USD Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD), the iShares iBoxx USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY).

This is the second consecutive week where HYG has appeared in the top 10 redemptions across U.S. listed ETFs, and the third consecutive appearance for both LQD and SPY.
