ETFs See $11B In Inflows In One Week
Demand for international equity and U.S. fixed-income ETFs remains strong.
Investors poured $11.3 billion into U.S.-listed ETFs in the past week, giving the month of June a healthy start in terms of asset growth.
The net creations brought year-to-date ETF inflows to $213.6 billion already—well ahead of last year’s pace.
Investor appetite for international equity and U.S. fixed-income ETFs goes on unabated. The two asset classes attracted more than $7.7 billion in combined inflows.
Among the most popular ETFs this week were some of the “classics” in U.S. fixed-income offerings: the iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD), the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) and iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG).
Investors watched former FBI director James Comey testify before the Senate Thursday where he said, among other things, he believed Russia to have interfered with the 2016 presidential election.
Still, 10-year treasury yields are ending the week slightly higher than they were a week ago, at around 2.21%, as investors brace for what could be a Federal Reserve interest rate hike next week.
Big Beneficiary
On the international equity front, the Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (VGK) was a big beneficiary, with inflows of $733 million this past week. A lot of attention has been paid to Europe this week as the U.K. delivered a surprising outcome to an election that has put into question the future of Brexit. The European Central Bank also made headlines with its decision to leave rates unchanged for now, a move that pressured the euro.
International fixed-income ETFs also had a notable week, seeing one of the biggest percentage gains, Flows of more than $1 billion into the iShares JP Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF (EMB) brought the asset class’ AUM total up almost 3% in the week.
EMB tracks an index of dollar-denominated emerging market sovereign debt in a portfolio led by Mexico, Indonesia and Russia. The fund has $12.7 billion in total assets.
