After the breakneck pace of July, flows into U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds cooled down a bit this week. Even so, they remained in positive territory, with $2.9 billion coming into ETFs as a whole.

U.S. equity ETFs were in favor, with inflows of $780 million, but commodities did a bit better, with inflows of $930 million of their own. International fixed-income ETFs also saw interest with inflows of $560 million, while international equity ETFs garnered $375 million and U.S. fixed-income ETFs netted $220 million.

EM & Gold In Favor

In terms of individual ETFs, the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) was the inflows leader of the week, with creations of $900 million. Other broad-based ETFs that garnered favor were the Vanguard S&P 500 Index Fund (VOO) and the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV).

Emerging market ETFs continued to gather assets this week after a strong July. The iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (IEMG) and the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) had inflows of more than $600 million and $300 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, after being absent for a few weeks, the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) reappeared on the top inflows list, with net flows of $840 million.

SPY & HYG Top Outflows List

On the other end of the spectrum, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) topped the outflows list with redemptions of $1.7 billion. A week ago, the world's largest ETF neared the $200 billion mark for total assets.

The iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) also saw substantial outflows, totaling $1.2 billion. Its rival the SPDR Barclays High Yield Bond ETF (JNK) was another big loser, with outflows of just under $400 million.

On a percentage-of-assets-basis, the Direxion Daily Gold Miners Index 3x Bull Shares (NUGT) and the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) had the largest outflows. NUGT lost $340, or 17% of its assets, while XBI shed $275 million, or 11% of its assets.
