Investors added modestly to their ETF positions during the week ending Thursday, April 20. According to the latest data from FactSet, $3.2 billion flowed into U.S.-listed ETFs in the period, pushing year-to-date inflows to $143 billion.

In contrast to recent weeks, U.S. equity ETFs didn't lead the charge. That segment actually had outflows of about $80 million. On the other hand, international equity ETFs and U.S. fixed-income ETFs picked up more than $1 billion each.

Week-over-week, the S&P 500 rebounded less than 1%, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was unchanged at 2.23%.

Meanwhile, international fixed-income ETFs and commodity ETFs had inflows of $350 million and $500 million, respectively.

Oil plunged below $50/barrel on Friday, while gold prices hovered near recent highs of $1,290/oz.

Safe-Haven GLD Tops Inflows List

In terms of individual ETFs, the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) took the top position, with inflows of just under $500 million. Jitters surrounding this weekend's French presidential elections and a potential U.S. government shutdown next week fueled safe-haven flows into GLD.

Other winners during the week included the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU), the iShares U.S. Real Estate ETF (IYR), the Goldman Sachs ActiveBeta U.S. Large Cap Equity ETF (GSLC) and the VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH). Each had inflows ranging from $200 million to $300 million.

On the outflows side, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) led the pack, with redemptions of $2.4 billion.

Other notable losers included the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), with outflows of $270 million; the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX), with outflows of $260 million; the VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX), with outflows of $220 million; and the VanEck Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ), with outflows of $200 million.
