'GOVT’ Bolsters Weekly ETF Inflows

Fresh six-month highs in the U.S. stock market encouraged investors to plow $9 billion into U.S.-listed ETFs this week, including $7.5 billion into U.S. equity ETFs.

The S&P 500 broke above the 2,900 level for the first time since last October, buoyed by a solid start to the corporate earnings season and fading concerns about economic growth and interest rates.

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield spiked to a three-week high near 2.55%. Investors responded by putting $1.3 billion into U.S. fixed-income ETFs this week.

Year-to-date net inflows for all ETFs now stand at $68.2 billion, compared to $71.2 billion at this same time last year.

‘SPY’ Beats Out ‘GOVT’

A familiar sight on top of the leaderboard was the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY). Its $3.4 billion in inflows easily outpaced the rest of the pack.

Coming in at No. 2 was a less familiar fund, the iShares U.S. Treasury Bond ETF (GOVT), which picked up $869 million.

The JPMorgan BetaBuilders Canada ETF (BBCA) and the JPMorgan BetaBuilders Europe ETF (BBEU) also were in favor, with inflows of $700 million and $626 million, respectively.

Outflows

On the outflows side, the iShares MSCI EAFE ETF (EFA) shed the most assets—$1.5 billion. It was followed by the iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF (SHY), the iShares JP Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF (EMB) and the iShares Global Tech ETF (IXN).
