Despite weekly flows for U.S.-listed ETFs registering $1.4 billion in equity ETF outflows, a surge in demand for dividend, gold and bond ETFs pushed the weekly inflows total to $8.5 billion.

Year to date, more than $250 billion in new assets have flowed in the U.S. ETF market, well ahead of last year’s $147 billion at this time. Total assets under management in the U.S. ETF market now stand at $4.63 trillion.

But as mentioned, the wrinkle this week was equity ETFs bleeding assets as investors seemingly search for safer ground after stocks continue to sit at all-time highs. The SPDR S&P Dividend ETF (SDY) led creations, with $1.33 billion in new assets, a near 8% increase in AUM for the fund. The SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 High Dividend ETF (SPYD) was also on the leader board, with $573 million in inflows.

The two biggest physical gold ETFs, the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) and the iShares Gold Trust (IAU), saw inflows of $918 million and $724 million, respectively, as they held down the third and fourth place spots. Rounding out the safe haven theme for the week was the more than $1 billion in new assets to the iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG).

Equity ETF Demand Pauses

The selling of equity ETFs was reflected across the cap spectrum.

The world’s largest ETF, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), saw more than $2 billion in outflows from the large cap fund, followed by the small cap fund, the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM), with $1.16 billion in redemptions. Also on the board for highest outflows were the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO), with $227 million, and the Financial Select SPDR Fund (XLF) saw $265 million leave the fund.

U.S. fixed income ETFs carried the week, with more than $5 billion in flows, as well as commodities, with nearly $2.4 billion of new assets, although most of that went into the two physical gold ETFs: GLD and IAU.
