A near-record amount of money headed into U.S.-listed ETFs this week, led by flows into Vanguard products. On net, creations for U.S.-listed ETFs totaled $62.2 billion during the week ending Thursday, Sept. 16—a huge sum, but shy of the weekly record of $71 billion set in March.

Just like then, the latest weekly inflows look like they are at least partly related to tax-related heartbeat trades. But while some of this week’s inflows may reverse next week, much of it may stick.

Back in March, after the big $71 billion haul, only about $20 billion of that came back out in the subsequent week.

In any case, net year-to-date inflows for all U.S.-listed ETFs now stand at $669.8 billion—double the $332.5 billion seen at this same time a year ago. At the current pace, ETFs are on track for more than $900 billion of inflows in 2021.

Vanguard ETFs Lead

Of this week’s inflows, about $53 billion went into U.S. equity ETFs. That includes the aforementioned Vanguard ETFs—the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI), the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (VIG), the Vanguard Extended Market ETF (VXF) and others. About half of this week’s inflows came from Vanguard products.

Also gathering assets was the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), with weekly inflows of $10.6 billion. Those inflows made up for a more than a 2% slide in the S&P 500. SPY now has $410.3 billion in assets under management.

Meanwhile, on the outflows side of the ledger, the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) led all ETFs, with weekly redemptions of $1.9 billion, followed by the iShares iBoxx USD Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD), with redemptions of $1.1 billion.

Investment-grade corporate bond prices were roughly flat week-over-week, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield edged up to 1.37% following a better-than-expected reading on U.S. retail sales for August.
