ETF inflows for 2020 climbed ever closer to record highs this week as investors added $12.6 billion to the space. U.S. stocks pulled back slightly during the period, but sentiment remained ebullient as two big IPOs listed on Wednesday and Thursday. DoorDash and Airbnb jumped 86% and 113%, respectively, on their first days of trading, pushing their market capitalizations into the tens of billions (over $100 billion in the case of ABNB).
Year-to-date ETF inflows now stand at $455.1 billion, ahead of the $289.5 billion seen at this same time a year ago and not far from the all-time annual record haul of $476.1 billion set in 2017.
'ARKK' Assets Surge
This week’s top inflows list was mostly made up of familiar names. The Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI), the Vanguard Value ETF (VTV) and the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) each picked up more than $1.1 billion of new money during the week ending Thursday, Dec. 10.
Meanwhile, the ARK innovation ETF (ARKK) registered weekly inflows of $757 million, pushing its assets under management above $15 billion. As first noted by Bloomberg’s Eric Balchunas, ARKK is now the world’s largest actively managed ETF, surpassing the JPMorgan Ultra-Short Income ETF (JPST).
Assets in ARKK stood at less than $9 billion at the end of September and $1.85 billion at the end of 2019.
Outflows For 'GLD'
On the other side of the ledger, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), the iShares iBoxx USD Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD) and the iShares iBoxx USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) topped the outflows list for the week.
The high-flying Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) and the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) also shed more than $550 million of assets each.
