ETF flows started November on a strong note as stock markets surged following this week's U.S. elections. While the results of the election were still be to finalized, markets were relieved by the likelihood of a split government and no new taxes. The S&P 500 jumped 4.2% in the two days following the election and 7.3% so far in November.

Meanwhile, investors added $13.3 billion to U.S.-listed ETFs during the week ending Thursday, Nov. 5. That pushed year-to-date inflows up to $367.7 billion, ahead of the $237.4 billion seen at this same time a year ago.

Inverse Nasdaq ETF Picks Up Assets

Of this week's inflows, $10 billion headed for U.S. equity ETFs, while the rest was evenly split between international equity ETFs, U.S. fixed income ETFs and international fixed income ETFs.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was the biggest flows winner of the week, followed by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) and the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO).

The ProShares UltraPro Short QQQ (SQQQ), which provides 3x inverse exposure to the Nasdaq-100 index, was an interesting addition to the top inflows list. It picked up $470 million of new assets during the week.

Assets In 'IDMO' Tumble

On the other side of the ledger, the iShares iBoxx USD Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD) and the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) shed assets, even as bond prices surged and bond yields tumbled following the election (bond prices and yields move inversely). Investors reasoned that a divided government reduces the likelihood of big spending packages being passed.

Finally, the Invesco S&P International Developed Momentum ETF (IDMO) shed nearly all of its assets this week following outflows of $299 million. Assets under management for the fund now total a mere $8 million.
