ETF inflows continued to mount during the first week of the final month of the year. According to FactSet, U.S.-listed ETFs added $13.1 billion of new money during the week ending Thursday, Dec. 7. Year-to-date inflows now stand at $437 billion.

The vast majority of this week's flows, $9.8 billion, went into U.S. equity ETFs. Stock investors were elated after the Senate passed its tax bill last weekend. The S&P 500 briefly touched a fresh record high of 2,665 on Monday.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was the biggest individual ETF winner, with inflows of $4.6 billion. That was followed by inflows of a little more than $1 billion each for the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) and the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM).

Notable Outflows

On the other hand, three smart-beta products had notable outflows during the week. The iShares Edge MSCI Min Vol USA ETF (USMV), the iShares Edge MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (MTUM) and the iShares Edge MSCI USA Quality Factor ETF (QUAL) had outflows ranging from $400 million to $800 million.

Other asset classes also had inflows during the period, but they were much more modest. International equity ETFs took in $998 billion in total; U.S. fixed-income ETFs garnered $819 million; and international fixed-income ETFs had inflows of $364 million.
