U.S. equities took a breather this week as a deadly virus killed dozens in China and sickened hundreds more, sparking concerns about a wider contagion. The S&P 500 fell week-over-week for the first time this year, but investors still added a modest sum to ETFs.

On net, $7.5 billion flowed into U.S.-listed ETFs during the week ending Thursday, Jan. 23. Of that, $1.3 billion went into U.S. equity ETFs, $3.3 billion went into international equity ETFs, $744 million went into U.S. fixed income ETFs and $1.3 billion went into commodity ETFs.

Year-to-date net inflows for all ETFs now stand at $42.7 billion, well ahead of last year's $4.7 billion pace.

ESG ETF's Assets Double

Headlining the top inflows list was the iShares ESG MSCI EM ETF (ESGE), which pulled in $1.2 billion this week, more than doubling its assets. ESG has been a huge theme recently and investors are clearly embracing the idea of investing based on  environmental, social and governance principles.

Following ESGE was the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD), with inflows of $1.1 billion. Gold prices rallied to recent highs above $1,570/oz on the back of coronavirus fears.

Meanwhile, the iShares 0-5 Year High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (SHYG) was the biggest fixed income flows winner of the week. Yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury tumbled to their lowest point in nearly three months as investors plowed into safe-haven bonds (bond yields and prices move inversely).
