ETF Inflows Steady Despite Market Rout
Exchange-traded funds pulled in $27 billion last week.
Investors remained bullish on equity and bond markets as exchange-traded funds brought in $27 billion in the week ending Friday, Nov. 18.
Equity markets slumped last week as oil prices fell on worries of potential weakening fuel demand in China and EU-imposed Russian sanctions took their toll. The S&P 500 slipped 1.2% during the week, while the Nasdaq tumbled 1.6%.
Also prompting the drop were comments from President of the St. Louis Federal Reserve James Bullard, who cautioned about the “limited effect” rate hikes had on the inflation, going on to say the central bank’s federal funds rate, which sets a benchmark for other U.S. banks’ lending, could reach more than 5% to 5.25%. The fed funds rate currently sits between 3.75% and 4%, up from effectively zero at the beginning of the year.
Still, investors poured just over $13 billion into equity-focused funds, a 22% drop from the $16 billion the week prior. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) and the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) collectively brought in $4.2 billion, according to ETF.com data.
Meanwhile, U.S.-listed fixed income ETFs posted a $9.3 billion haul, falling a touch short of the $9.8 billion brought in the week ending Nov. 11. Top performers of the week included the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT), the Vanguard Short-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCHS) and the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD).
On the other side of the ledger, funds that saw the greatest outflows included the SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 High Dividend ETF (SPYD), the iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (MTUM) and the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD).
