ETFs kicked off 2020 with strong inflows, continuing where they left off in 2019. After registered net inflows of $326.3 billion last year—the second-largest annual haul ever—ETF picked up $15.1 billion during the first full week of the new year.

After six trading sessions, year-to-date inflows now stand at $21.7 billion, compared to $12.7 billion at the same time last year.

US Equities Leading

Unlike last year, when U.S. fixed income ETFs managed to attract more assets than U.S. equity ETFs, stocks are in the lead early in 2020. U.S. equities had net inflows of $5.3 billion this week and $11.2 billion year-to-date.

But U.S. fixed income ETFs aren’t slouching. They had respectable inflows of $5.2 billion for the week and $5.8 billion for the year.

A solid start to the year for U.S. stocks, with the S&P 500 up about 1.3% so far, is keeping investors interested in equities. At the same time, geopolitical factors have given safe-haven bonds a bid. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield dipped from 1.92% to 1.82% since the start of the year (bond yields and prices move inversely).

Sector ETFs In Vogue

Looking at individual ETFs, a handful of sector ETFs topped the weekly inflows list. The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI), the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) each made the weekly top 10.

On the other hand, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) and the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) topped the weekly outflows list.
