The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) led all asset gatherers during the week ending April 21. The exchange-traded fund’s $1.1 billion worth of inflows was the largest among all U.S.-listed ETFs and made up a large portion of the $2.4 billion that went into ETFs as a whole.

Year-to-date inflows for U.S.-listed ETFs now stand at $110 billion, while assets under management are $6.97 trillion. For comparison, inflows at this same time last year were $180 billion and AUM was $6.84 trillion.

International Equity ETFs in Demand

Though a relatively quiet week for ETF flows, the data suggests the trends we’ve seen all year long remain in place.

ETF investors continue to shun U.S. stock funds; they had inflows of $440 million in aggregate last week, but year-to-date inflows for the segment are a paltry $6.6 billion.

On the other hand, international equity ETFs, which collected $915 million last week and $33.2 billion since the start of the year, are in much higher demand.

Likewise, U.S. fixed income ETFs, which had $387 million of inflows last week and $58.8 billion of inflows this year, remain in favor among ETF investors.

In addition to the aforementioned TLT, the iShares iBoxx USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) and the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) made the top weekly inflows list.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury bond yield was little changed, around the 3.5% level, last week.

TIP & ESGU Lead Outflows

Meanwhile, on the outflows side of the ledger, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) headlined with a $2.1 billion outflow.

Other losers included the iShares TIPS Bond ETF (TIP), with redemptions of $623 million and the iShares ESG Aware MSCI USA ETF (ESGU), with redemptions of $449 million.

After gathering assets rapidly last year, TIP has lost some of its popularity in 2023 as inflation concerns have diminished a bit.

At the same time, ESG is facing headwinds as some investors reevaluate their stance on sustainable investing. ESGU has seen a whopping $7.1 billion of outflows since the start of 2023.
