A modest sell-off in equity markets didn't stop investors from adding to their ETF holdings this week. The S&P 500 declined in every session but one during the holiday-shortened trading week, yet U.S.-listed ETFs registered net inflows of $9 billion. That brought year-to-date inflows up to $98.3 billion, well ahead of last year's $9.4 billion pace.

U.S. equity ETFs picked up the most new cash of all segments, $3.2 billion. That was followed by U.S. fixed-income ETFs, with inflows of $3.1 billion. This week, the benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yield dipped below 1.44% for the first time since September, pushing the prices of many bond ETFs higher (bond prices and yields move inversely).

Commodity ETFs also saw some decent demand during the week, led by the nearly $600 million that flowed into the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD)

Only the Invesco S&P 500 Low Volatility ETF (SPLV), the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) and the SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF (SPLG) had larger inflows than GLD during the period.
