Gifts aren't the only thing people are buying this holiday season. Investors bought up $15.9 billion worth of ETFs this week, too. This week's data, which measures U.S.-listed ETF flows for the week ending Thursday, Dec. 5, showed that investors were particularly interested in U.S. equity ETFs. That segment picked up $11 billion of fresh cash as the S&P 500 rallied back near record highs.

U.S. stocks sold off during the first half of the week on worries that a trade deal with China wouldn't get done, but they quickly rebounded as optimism returned thanks to positive comments from various U.S. and Chinese officials. A deal would halt tariffs on $156 billion worth of Chinese goods that are scheduled to go into effect on Dec. 15.

Meanwhile, $1.9 billion flowed into international equity ETFs and $3.1 billion went into U.S. fixed income ETFs this week. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield edged up to 1.84% on Friday after a robust U.S. jobs report dashed recession fears.

Year-to-date ETF inflows now stand at $280.2 billion, ahead of last year's $261.8 billion pace.
