Weekly Flows Into US Equity ETFs Total $6.4B
U.S.-listed ETFs had inflows of $7.4 billion in the week ending Thursday, April 7.
A cool $7.4 billion of fresh money entered U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds in the week ending Thursday, April 7. The vast majority of that money, $6.4 billion, entered U.S. equity ETFs, as investors remained optimistic on the outlook for U.S. corporations despite head winds from overseas.
Meanwhile, U.S. fixed-income ETFs fell out of favor in the week. The category lost $69 million in the period, second only to currency ETFs, which had outflows of $107 million.
As is usually the case in a week with big flows, the SPDR S&P 500 (SPY | A-98) led the pack, with inflows of $1.3 billion. From there, inflows were evenly split among a host of different funds.
The Vanguard REIT ETF (VNQ | A-91) picked up $667 million in inflows, the Technology Select SPDR (XLK | A-94) had inflows of $600 million and the SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (XOP | A-66) gained $400 million.
Meanwhile, despite the net outflow for U.S. fixed-income ETFs as a whole, a few ETFs in the category saw interest from investors. The iShares TIPS Bond ETF (TIP | A-99) garnered inflows of $459 million and the iShares iBoxx Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD | A-77) saw inflows of $452 million.
On the other end of the spectrum, four Treasury ETFs were in the top five in terms of outflows for the week, including the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF | A-55) and the iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF (SHY | A-97), with outflows of $529 million and $467 million, respectively.
Finally, when it comes to equity ETFs, the iShares MSCI Japan ETF (EWJ | B-96), the PowerShares DWA Momentum ETF (PDP | B-72) and the WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity ETF (DXJ | B-65) were among the biggest flows losers.
