Investors added to their ETF holdings this week ahead of the Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. On net, $24.1 billion flowed into U.S.-listed ETFs during the week ending Thursday, May 27, bringing year-to-date inflows up to $393.5 billion. That compares to year-to-date inflows of $137.9 billion at this same time a year ago.

The S&P 500 hovered near record highs this week as growth stocks continued to rebound from their steep losses earlier this month. U.S. equity ETFs pulled in $11.1 billion of fresh cash during the period.

International stocks also did well; the MSCI Europe Index hit a record high this week, surpassing previous peaks from the years 2000 and 2007.

The JPMorgan BetaBuilders Europe ETF (BBEU) was one of the top asset gatherers of the week, pulling in $1.1 billion of new money.

Joining BBEU on the weekly top inflows list were the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) and the iShares MSCI USA Quality Factor ETF (QUAL).

SPLV’s Heartbeat Trade

On the other side of the ledger, the Invesco S&P 500 Low Volatility ETF (SPLV) topped the outflows list. Its nearly $2 billion of outflows reversed a similarly-sized inflow from last week, suggesting this was the second leg of a tax-related heartbeat trade.

Meanwhile, the iShares iBoxx USD Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD), the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) and the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) each saw weekly outflows of more than $500 million.
