Heavy Outflows From US ETFs; Int'l ETFs Gain
Outflows from U.S. equity ETFs like 'SPY' fueled a net outflow in total ETF assets. However, most other segments of the ETF market saw inflows, including international equity ETFs and fixed-income ETFs.
U.S. equity ETFs were big losers in the week ending Thursday, Sept. 24. The segment saw $6.8 billion in outflows, helping push overall ETF flows into the negative to the tune of $3.6 billion. On the other hand, international equity ETFs were big winners, garnering $2.1 billion in inflows from investors.
Fixed-income and leveraged funds also saw interest. U.S. and international fixed-income products gained nearly $900 million in assets combined, while leveraged ETFs gained $65 million.
In terms of individual ETFs, the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets (EEM | B-100) took the top spot, with inflows of $664 million despite continued jitters about the health of the developing-world economies. The iShares MSCI EMU (EZU | A-82), which tracks countries that use the euro currency, is another international fund that also fared well, with inflows of $480 million.
As for ETFs that track U.S. markets, the iShares Russell 2000 (IWM | A-90) was easily the most popular during the week, adding $657 million. Sector funds like the Technology Select SPDR (XLK | A-91) and Utilities Select SPDR (XLU | A-89) also did well, with inflows of $306 million and $297 million, repsectively.
On the other end of the spectrum was the world's largest ETF, the SPDR S&P 500 (SPY | A-99), which had outflows of nearly $6 billion in the week. Following suit was the Vanguard Small-Cap (VB | A-100), with outflows of $673 million, the mirror image of the inflows into the aforementioned IWM.
On a percentage basis, the iShares U.S. Real Estate (IYR | A-97), the First Trust Dow Jones Internet (FDN | A-59), and the Schwab U.S. Small-Cap (SCHA | A-96) saw heavy outflows.
