Record Highs Fuel Weekly ETF Inflows
Fixed income ETFs saw a rare outflow this week, but equity ETF inflows more than made up for it.
Fresh trade hopes lifted U.S. stocks to record highs this week, bolstering ETF assets. Following the week's gains, U.S.-listed ETF assets under management surpassed $4.2 trillion.
Price appreciation wasn't the only thing lifting ETF assets. Investors put $11.6 billion in new cash to work also. Most of it went into U.S. equity ETFs like the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) and the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO).
The S&P 500 reached a record high just below the 3,100 level on Thursday, extending its year-to-date gains to more than 25%.
Meanwhile, U.S. fixed income ETFs registered a rare outflow this week to the tune of $940 million. The benchmark 10-year Treasury bond yield surged 0.25% to as high as 1.97% on Thursday, putting it at its loftiest level in three months. Bond yields and prices move inversely, so many fixed income ETFs sold off this week.
Year-to-date inflows for all U.S.-listed ETFs now stand at $237.4 billion, ahead of last year's $227.8 billion pace.
