ETFs Close Week Just Shy Of $500B
U.S. funds get tantalizingly close to breaking last year’s record inflows early.
At this point last year, U.S.-based ETFs had net inflows of about $230.1 billion.
Fast-forward to this week: ETFs are now less than $2 billion away from reaching the half-trillion-dollar inflow mark just a few weeks into July and a hair past the halfway point of the year.
Flows in the week ending July 15 totaled just under $20.6 billion, roaring back after two weeks of inflows in the $4 billion range as traders readjusted their positions for the second half of 2021.
Equities Pull Out Of Two-Week Slide
U.S. equities roared back to life after two weeks of net outflows, posting gains of more than $13.7 billion after losing $770 million the week prior. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) led the gains, with just short of $4.5 billion in inflows, while the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) and the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) both pulled in $1.4 billion.
The First Trust Capital Strength ETF (FTCS) gained $1.8 billion on the week, for an increase of 18.21% in assets under management. The vast majority of that money was moved on a Thursday trade, so a similar amount of outflows in First Trust funds in the coming days is expected.
Corporate Junk, Small Caps Fall
Leading outflows in the week is the iShares iBoxx USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG), with a loss of $1.2 billion. The high yield fund was joined by the SPDR Bloomberg Barclays High Yield Bond ETF (JNK), with an outflow of $791 million.
Both of those funds have slid since early July, and are currently posting returns of around 0.6% for the month versus year-to-date returns in the 2.5=2.75% range.
Small cap equity funds also appeared in the top redemptions column, led by $860 million in flows out from the iShares Core S&P Small-Cap ETF (IJR). The iShares S&P Small-Cap 600 Value ETF (IJS) and the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) posted respective outflows of $409 million and $377 million.
The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) posted outflows of $613 million for the week. Two-thirds of those outflows came on Tuesday, when the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics posted inflation prints showing increases of 0.9% month-over-month and 5.4% year-over-year as the economy continues to emerge from the pandemic.
